Sitting under the stars, cooking out, and eating smores can just make any day seem better. Many techniques that are used in other types of climbing are used in ice climbing but the challenge is altogether different.
One of the most common problems that campers face is being unprepared for changing climactic conditions, consequently being ill-equipped with proper clothing and equipment for storms, sudden shifts in temperatures, wind chill factors and heavy rains. Using the Internet to research available sites is an ideal tool to determine the areas that are closest to you. The first time I took camping equipment outdoor on a rock climbing trip, I found this out the hard way.
In some areas it rains plenty, so you have to be prepared. Breathe deeply of fresh air, that's what it's all about. There are some sport-wool fabrics that are used in long johns, next a warm layer of clothing that may be a fleece type material and finally a quick-drying outer layer from a material like nylon or goretex.
It is important to stay warm, everything from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. For me, there is no drug that you can take, that will give you the incredible feeling of accomplishment that finishing a good hike gives you. If you do not have a tent you may be able to build a snow shelter for protection, however, you'll want to practice building a snow shelter before you actually need to spend a night in one during a winter hike.
Much like rock climbing, ice is a blast. Guided nature tours where wildlife and plant life are pointed out and discussed will educate children on the environment around them and the importance of nature.
