Before you set off into the woods, make sure that you have a pack prepared with food like energy bars or trail mix to keep you moving, plenty of water, dry, protected matches, a space blanket to keep you warm and to signal for help during the day, an LED flashlight or LED lantern for use at night, a compass, and the best survival knife that you can find or afford. Many techniques that are used in other types of climbing are used in ice climbing but the challenge is altogether different.

It is essential that you first gather as much information as possible from park rangers and guide books, understand well the geographical conditions and interact with campers who have already been there. Colorado is famous for climbing adventures because of the thousands of crags and cliffs that adorn Colorado's peaks and plateaus. It is also strongly recommended that you check all the camping gear before you start on the trip.
